DELL BARRAS INTERVIEW (Part 1)

I started doing short stories for Horror komiks then Nestor Redondo hired me as art director in his Superyor komiks ( doing letterings, art revisions while I studied under him) then Mars Ravelo hired me to work for Atlas and Gasi where I did lots of novels like Javlin Ang Taong Isda, Darna at ang Babaing Linta to name a few. Ravelo then built his own publishing house and took me with him, where I did Candy (which later was bought by my late kumpadre Ricky Belmonte and starred her daughter Sheryl Cruz for film. I had to follow my wife to the States, so from Japan (I sang there for 6 years) I came here to the States. Romeo Tanghal took me to D.C. comics and I started as an inker on various titles like Blue Beetle, Green Arrow and helped Romeo on Teen Titans. Then Marvel Comics called me up to ink The New Defenders and The Incredible Hulk. And Conan the barbarian (which I’m working on now as an animated direct to DVD)

I still remember Ernie Guanlao and Vic Catan as my batch.
From local komiks to international market, nag-adjust po ba kayo sa style or during that time, talagang bilib na ba ang mga Americans sa gawa ng Pinoy na kahit hindi na sila mag-adjust?
I started as an inker. I inked with my Filipino style of inking which they approved. Those days, they liked the styles of Filipinos because of the greats like Nestor and Nebres are already there. We didn’t have time to adjust because of the deadlines. Just ink it as you get the job.

Then sa US?

Javlin ang Taong Isda / Darna at ang Babaing Linta / Candy// at iba pa
U.S.: Death’s Head ( I went to London to do this for Marvel comics U.K.) and my collaboration (penciling and Inking with Neal Adams for his Continuity Comics where I showed Tor Infante’s work to Neal Adams and he was called and hired the same day.

Is it the style, or the discipline? Ano naman po ang madalas nilang puna?

Their being always on deadline and perseverance for work. It’s always praising the Pinoys for a job well done. Sobrang manira ang mga puti dito, maraming back biters.

During your time dito sa local komiks, sapat po ba ang binabayad ng mga publishers sa mga artists? I mean, mas mura ang bilihin nu'ng araw, mas mababa ang standard of living, ang kinikita niyo po ba sa komiks noon ay talagang makakabuhay ng pamilya? Or talagang naramdaman ninyo na hindi sapat ang kita dito sa local komiks kaya sa US po kayo nagtrabaho?

Mars Ravelo always takes care of his artists.Kaya those times. Pag kinuha ka ni Mars Ravelo, You’re made! I think sapat nang bumuhay ng pamilya ang kinikita sa komiks noong araw, kaya nga yung ibang artists tatlo- tatlo ang kabit those days ( hindi ako kasama doon, hanggang girlfriend lang ako dahil ako ang hinahabol ng mga babae noong araw( joke only). Kung hindi lang nandito na ang misis ko, I will not leave. I like being a comicbook artist. That’s why I miss those days na pag nakasingil, e tuloy na kami sa beerhouse. I really miss those days. Those days that will never come back.

Pakikisama, sipag at tiyaga. Study the trend and always apply it. Practice, practice, practice. Remember na ‘Nothing is Forever’, everything will soon come to an end. Everybody should save for the future. Dito sa States, pag wala kang job , you’re screwed.

If given a chance na makapag-drawing ulit sa local komiks, gagawin niyo po ba?

Are you kidding? I would love to! I’m still a Filipino! As of right now I’m putting together an anthology of shorth stories comic book para sa Pilipinas.with the artists here contributing kasama na ang mga Guhit Pinoy sa Saudi.
